AIM:

To train individual finger movements in preparation for manipulating objects

Rationale:

An important component for manipulating objects is the ability to move fingers individually (ie, fractionation). Task-related training is set up so the patient can practice with manual guidance from the therapist if necessary.

Equipment:

  • Table
  • Chairs
  • Objects, eg, ruler, counter, coins

Key Points:

  • Patient is positioned in sitting, arm supported on table, shoulder slightly flexed, elbow flexed and forearm pronated
  • Patient moves fingers individually and in different combinations , eg, in different sequences, taps out a tune
  • To progress this training, patient moves an object around in the hand
  • Therapist is positioned to the side of the patient and provides manual guidanceĀ at the hand if necessary

Common Errors:

  • Patient abducts and/or internally rotates shoulder
  • Patient moves all fingers at the same time

Progression and Variety:

  • Decrease/remove manual guidance
  • Remove support from table
  • Increase speed of movement
  • Increase size of objects placed in the hand
