AIM:

To prevent loss of forearm, wrist, finger and webspace range using low load prolonged stretch

Rationale:

A low load prolonged stretch is used to prevent loss of range of movement (in persons at risk) or reverse loss of range of movement of forearm supination, wrist extension, finger extension, thumb conjunct rotation and hand webspace.

Equipment:

  • Adjustable height plinth
  • Weighted cylindrical object, eg, can
  • Tape
  • Bandage
  • Sandbag

Key Points:

  • Patient is positioned in sitting with forearm, but not the wrist, supported by table
  • Thumb and fingers are placed around the can and the thumb is taped into abduction and attached to the can
  • Can is bandaged into patient’s hand
  • Forearm is positioned in supination
  • A sandbag is placed on the forearm to secure the position

Common Errors:

  • Cylindrical object is too heavy or too large in diameter, so that the position is not comfortable for the patient
  • Patient moves out of the position

Progression and Variety:

  • Not applicable
