AIM:

To prevent loss of the ankle dorsiflexion range using low load prolonged stretch

Rationale:

A low load prolonged stretch is used to prevent loss of range of movement (in persons at risk) or reverse loss of range of movement of ankle dorsiflexion.

Equipment:

  • Wedge
  • Chair

Key Points:

  • Patient is positioned in standing on a wedge, back against the wall, with feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointing forward, trunk, hips and knees extended
  • Ensure patient’s heels remain in contact with the wedge during the stretch
  • Ensure patient bears weight through both feet
  • Therapist is positioned to the side of the patient and provides assistance to step onto wedge if necessary
  • A chair may be placed on the patient’s intact side, for support (if necessary)

Common Errors:

  • Angle of wedge is excessive, so that the position is not comfortable for the patient
  • Patient moves out of the position

Progression and Variety:

  • Not applicable
