About the Neurological Physiotherapy Teaching Team These resources were developed by the Neurological Physiotherapy Teaching Team at the University of Sydney from 2008-2010. The aim of the resources is to support student’s comprehension of the selected skills alongside preparation and revision of this material. Students who have not been introduced to specific skills contained in the website are advised not to practice these skills without consulting the relevant academic and/or clinical educator.

Physiotherapy eSkills – an online learning resource designed to enhance learning of practical skills in Neurological Physiotherapy

These resources were developed by the Neurological Physiotherapy Teaching Team at the University of Sydney from 2008-2010.  The aim of the resources is to support the learning of practical skills in the classroom (where another student acts as a ‘patient’), before students use these skills in supervised clinical education placements.

The resources have been designed to seamlessly integrate with the Neurological Physiotherapy curriculum across academic and clinical units of study in undergraduate (UG) and graduate entry (GEM) programs. Students engage in lectures covering the major impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions associated with neurological conditions, as well exploring research evidence for physiotherapy interventions. These lectures are integrated with tutorial and practical classes focusing on the theoretical rationale and the evidence-base underlying interventions; as well as developing clinical reasoning and practical skills. The resources include a total of 88 practical skills across the Neurological Physiotherapy curricula.

The essential elements for each skill are:

(i) a streamed high quality video-clip;

(ii) text describing the aim, rationale, equipment, key points, common errors and methods of progression; and

(iii) a downloadable PDF document incorporating the online text information and a still image of the video-clip.

The four modules are:

Module 1 – Lower limb module – acute conditions

Module 2 – Upper limb module – acute conditions

Module 3 – Degenerative conditions

Module 4 – Spinal cord injury

The resources are used by physiotherapy students in preparation for practical classes, for consolidation of learning, for revision prior to and during clinical education placements.
