AIM:

To improve the temporal accuracy of closed tasks which require rhythm (finger tapping)

Rationale:

  • Practice is set up so that feedback about timing is implicit in the task

Equipment:

  • Table
  • 2 chairs

Key Points:

  • Ensure the patient is sitting upright with the feet supported on the floor
  • Ensure the arm is not supported on the table
  • Movement should be in the fingers and the wrist, not the elbow or shoulder

Common Errors:

  • Patient stiffens the IP joints of the finger in extension when tapping and produces the movement at the elbow
  • Patient supports the arm on the table
  • Patient taps with excessive force

Progression and Variety:

  • Increase speed
  • Add accuracy requirements by using a calculator, keyboard or telephone
  • Add variety by using related tasks such as door knocking or hammering
