AIM:
To train individual finger movements in preparation for manipulating objects
Rationale:
An important component for manipulating objects is the ability to move fingers individually (ie, fractionation). Task-related training is set up so the patient can practice with manual guidance from the therapist if necessary.
Equipment:
- Table
- Chairs
- Objects, eg, ruler, counter, coins
Key Points:
- Patient is positioned in sitting, arm supported on table, shoulder slightly flexed, elbow flexed and forearm pronated
- Patient moves fingers individually and in different combinations , eg, in different sequences, taps out a tune
- To progress this training, patient moves an object around in the hand
- Therapist is positioned to the side of the patient and provides manual guidanceĀ at the hand if necessary
Common Errors:
- Patient abducts and/or internally rotates shoulder
- Patient moves all fingers at the same time
Progression and Variety:
- Decrease/remove manual guidance
- Remove support from table
- Increase speed of movement
- Increase size of objects placed in the hand
