AIM:
To prevent loss of external rotation range using low load prolonged stretch.
Rationale:
A low load prolonged stretch is used to prevent loss of range of movement (in persons at risk) or reverse loss of range of movement in shoulder external rotation.
Equipment:
- Adjustable height plinth
- Pillow
- Wedge
- Sandbag
Key Points:
- Patient is positioned in supine, with shoulder abducted <90°, elbow flexion and shoulder external rotation (at the end of the patient’s comfortable available range)
- A wedge (or pillow) may be placed under the forearm to accommodate patient’s comfortable available range of shoulder external rotation and support arm
- A sandbag is placed on the forearm to secure the position
Common Errors:
- Therapist excessively forces shoulder range of movement
- Patient moves out of the position
Progression and Variety:
- Not applicable
