AIM:
To improve the temporal accuracy of closed tasks which require rhythm (finger tapping)
Rationale:
- Practice is set up so that feedback about timing is implicit in the task
Equipment:
- Table
- 2 chairs
Key Points:
- Ensure the patient is sitting upright with the feet supported on the floor
- Ensure the arm is not supported on the table
- Movement should be in the fingers and the wrist, not the elbow or shoulder
Common Errors:
- Patient stiffens the IP joints of the finger in extension when tapping and produces the movement at the elbow
- Patient supports the arm on the table
- Patient taps with excessive force
Progression and Variety:
- Increase speed
- Add accuracy requirements by using a calculator, keyboard or telephone
- Add variety by using related tasks such as door knocking or hammering
